It is an honour to introduce, as the Founding Head of the Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) at IIT Mandi, how this young but dynamic centre is shaping the institute’s outreach activities and making a profound impact beyond conventional academic boundaries.
Established in early 2022 under the leadership of the Director of IIT Mandi, CCE was founded to cater to the growing national demand for skilling, up-skilling, and re-skilling among professionals from government and semi-government organisations, public and private enterprises, research institutions, and industry.
The CCE at IIT Mandi serves as the institute’s central hub for academic outreach and lifelong learning initiatives. It provides a unified platform for organising and executing all institute-level outreach activities, including conferences, workshops, symposia, short-term courses, training programmes, and similar initiatives. Beyond organising, CCE also provides the required logistical and administrative infrastructure for the smooth functioning of these initiatives.
Our programmes span a broad spectrum—from exposure programmes for school students and early learners to specialised technical training and executive education for working professionals and educators. Through initiatives such as NPTEL, GIAN, Tinkering Lab activities, and the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme (MMTTP), CCE extends IIT Mandi’s expertise to learners across the country.
Through this diverse and dynamic range of engagements, CCE opens the doors of IIT Mandi’s world-class academic ecosystem to learners from India and across the globe, offering them access to state-of-the-art laboratories, faculty, and industry experts.
Despite being a relatively young centre, CCE’s journey since 2022 has been remarkable-marked by rapid growth and multidimensional evolution. What began as a platform for short-term workshops and faculty development programmes has steadily transformed into a comprehensive centre offering structured, credit-bearing curricula and nationally significant skilling initiatives, developed in close collaboration with leading industry and academic partners. Today, CCE proudly trains over 4,000 learners annually across more than 70 diverse programmes, a testament to the centre’s growing scale and ambition.
CCE’s current portfolio is both rich and forward-looking. It encompasses short-term skill-enrichment courses during semester breaks, executive and leadership development programmes, and minor and certification offerings in high-demand domains such as artificial intelligence, data science, semiconductor design and technology, and full-stack AI engineering. A particular focus has been placed on equipping individuals with deep expertise in Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI, preparing them not merely as users of these technologies, but as informed practitioners and innovators capable of driving AI-led transformation across industries and institutions. These programmes are delivered in partnership with reputable organisations, ensuring a balance between industry relevance and academic rigour.Furthermore, CCE’s coordination of NPTEL courses and GIAN programmes has dramatically extended our reach, enabling thousands of learners nationwide to access IIT-quality education through online platforms and intensive, internationally collaborative modules.
The Tinkering Lab has introduced a vital experiential dimension by fostering curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving skills among school and college students through hands-on projects and maker-style activities. Complementing this, the MMTTP and allied teacher-training development initiatives have enabled us to work directly with school and college teachers, strengthening classroom practices, encouraging activity-based learning, and creating a multiplier effect in which each trained teacher goes on to positively influence countless student batches over the years. All these programmes are thoughtfully designed to be flexible and accessible, delivered through a blend of online, hybrid, and on-campus formats to serve diverse learner communities across the country.
Beyond education, CCE has firmly established itself as a vital bridge between IIT Mandi and the broader ecosystem, spanning government departments, public sector undertakings, private industry, and educational institutions. This interface enables the institute to contribute meaningfully and directly to national skilling missions and strategic workforce development goals. The growing scale, diversity, and societal impact of CCE’s initiatives reflect the trust placed in us by our partners and participants, as well as the unwavering dedication of our faculty, staff, and collaborators who work tirelessly to turn this vision into reality.
The Centre for Continuing Education was founded in early 2022 at IIT Mandi as a strategic, forward-thinking response to the rapidly changing educational and industrial landscape, where continuous learning, upskilling, and re-skilling have shifted from aspirational goals to absolute necessities. As one of the newer central facilities of IIT Mandi, CCE complements the institute’s core teaching and research by extending its expertise to a much wider audience than conventional degree programmes alone can reach.
From its very inception, CCE was envisioned not merely as an administrative unit but as a dynamic catalyst for lifelong learning, pedagogical innovation, and meaningful engagement with society. By serving as the institutional anchor for all major outreach and continuing education activities, encompassing NPTEL, GIAN, Tinkering Lab initiatives, MMTTP and allied teacher training programmes, national skilling missions, and strategic academic collaborations, CCE ensures coherence, quality, and impact, while offering faculty and schools a robust platform to translate their knowledge and research into programmes that directly benefit learners and organisations across India.
